Restored Technology with Purpose: Centro San Luis's Digital Inclusion Project
Centro San Luis in Bilbao continues its commitment to Vocational Training engaged with its community, relaunching the Digital Inclusion project for another year.
30/05/2025 - ArtículosThis initiative, which combines sustainability, social justice, and technical training, has a clear goal: to reduce the digital divide and give a second life to IT equipment, making it available to people in vulnerable situations.
Since its launch in 2019, the project has solidified as a transformative experience for students in the intermediate-level vocational course in Microcomputer Systems and Networks (Sistemas Microinformáticos y Redes, or SMR). In previous years, repaired computers were sent to the NGO Alas Gambia, crossing borders to become educational tools. This 2024-2025 academic year, however, the focus has shifted to the immediate local environment.
From the Classroom to the Neighborhood: Collaboration with FP Peñascal Kooperatiba
In this edition, the restored equipment—a total of 16 laptops donated by companies, students, and teachers—has been delivered to FP Peñascal Kooperatiba, an organization that works with young people under guardianship who are outside the formal education system. These young people, participating in the #HASI project, received the updated equipment on May 8th, ready for use with the Ubuntu operating system and the LibreOffice application suite.
Beyond the donation, the initiative also aimed to be a meeting point for connection, learning, and coexistence.
A Day of Real Connection
On May 29th, 1st-year SMR students visited the facilities of Peñascal Kooperatiba, in a day that was much more than just a laptop delivery. Guided by the #HASI project's professional team—with special mention to its coordinator, Asier Fariña, and teachers Ayaub, Xebas, Ziortza, Ander, and Alfonso—the San Luis students shared technical training, experiences, and even sports with their hosts.
During the day:
We were able to visit Peñascal's facilities and learn about the projects they are developing.
San Luis students offered practical training to teach how to use the delivered equipment.
Peñascal's Culinary program prepared tortilla sandwiches that won everyone over.
Sports activities were organized to end the day in a fun and collegial atmosphere.
"When a student repairs a computer knowing it will be used by a young person in a vulnerable situation to improve their educational and job opportunities, motivation and a sense of responsibility multiply," explains the teaching staff responsible for the project.
Technical Training with Real Impact
Digital Inclusion is not just a computer repair project. It is a meaningful training experience. Through the process of diagnosing, cleaning, and reinstalling software, students acquire technical skills and, at the same time, develop values such as solidarity, empathy, and social commitment.
The students learn that each restored device is not just another machine, but an opportunity for other people. A device that can change educational paths, open job doors, or simply allow someone to stay connected.
Circular Economy and Values 4.0
The project also has a strong ecological dimension. By reducing electronic waste generation and extending the lifespan of devices, a circular economy model is promoted, aligned with the Values 4.0 advocated by Vocational Training in the Basque Country: inclusion, sustainability, cooperation, and technology with purpose.
Furthermore, initiatives like this strengthen the concept of "FP Solidaria" (Vocational Training with a Social Conscience), where learning goes beyond the curriculum, connecting with reality and generating a direct impact on the community.
Technology with Purpose: An Invitation to Participate
From Centro San Luis, we encourage the entire educational community, institutions, and companies to join these types of initiatives. Donating equipment, offering training, collaborating on digital inclusion projects… any gesture can make a difference.
Because true technological innovation is not just about creating the latest thing, but about making technology reach those who need it most. And because training competent technicians is important, but training committed individuals is essential.
We continue working so that each restored device is much more than just a computer: it is a tool for change.
